Tips for getting sleep

So over the course of the last few years, I've had difficulty sleeping. On two separate occasions I spent MULTIPLE DAYS in a row unable to sleep. Other times I simply don't sleep enough. Given my experience with sleep and trying to get sleep, I thought I would share some useful tips with anyone else out there who suffers from difficulty sleeping.

Melatonin

This is an over the counter herbal supplement that can help with sleep. Unlike some herbal supplements, this one is actually good and works. You should be able to find this in a drug store, supplement/vitamin specialty store or somewhere like a Wal-Mart.

Melatonin is a natural hormone that your body uses for sleep so this tends to be a gentle, safe option. I've had some success with this in the past. More info.

Exercise

If you can, get some exercise about a two or three hours before bedtime. This is a piece of advice I got from a family friend and has worked fairly well for me when insomnia hasn't been severe. If possible, go for a walk, run or use a treadmill.

Wear your brain out

This has been a pretty successful method that I use most nights. There are many ways you could accomplish this such as doing puzzles, math, playing strategic video games, but I prefer to play games in my head as I lay in bed.

Try this. You're going to work your way through the alphabet. Start at A, end at Z. Starting at A, think of as many things as you can that start with A. Maybe movie titles, actor/actress names, places, etc, that start with A. When you absolutely cannot thing of another, move to B and continue from there.

This is my favorite non-medication method of getting to sleep. Try it.

Seek medical assistance

If nothing else works, you should definitely ask a doctor or pharmacist. Insomnia can sometimes come from anxiety, depression or be caused by something else that you might not be aware of.
